U.S. stocks saw losses mount on Tuesday as President Donald Trump’s tariffs on key trade partners took effect, prompting retaliatory measures and escalating fears of a global trade war and economic instability.

Tuesday’s sharp decline followed the U.S. instituting 25% duties on Canada and Mexico at midnight, while Trump also imposed an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods.

These tariffs sparked a broad sell-off, with nearly 80% of S&P 500 stocks trading lower, and the small-cap-focused Russell 2000 dropping more than 2%.

With Tuesday’s losses, the S&P 500 now trades below its level from Election Day in November, when voters went to the polls to return Trump to office. Traders will be closely watching Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night for any statements regarding the tariffs, which were a central part of his campaign.

As of 11:21 AM ET, the Dow was down -719.95 points, or -1.66689%, at $42471.3. The Nasdaq Composite lost -289.544 points, or -1.41756%, at $20136.04. The S&P 500 declined -99.71 points, or -1.70453%, at $5750. Among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors, 11 showed negative movement, with Financials leading the way with a 2.8% decrease.
